Gamuda’s team - A great mix of global and local talent
For Kenny Lim, Gamuda Australia has given him the platform to share his engineering expertise and lead a team to future successes.

It was always my dream to live and work in Australia, which was why I volunteered to move to Sydney with the first group of Gamuda employees in 2019.

Gamuda’s approach to Australia has always been to blend the best local talent with Gamuda’s subject matter experts (SMEs), which provides a combination of global experience, fresh thinking and local knowledge to the team.

A civil engineer by training, I have nearly 20 years’ experience in transportation infrastructure and construction management relating to highway and rail projects. I’ve worked with Gamuda for seven years and bring experience in delivering innovation on large scale works from projects in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Kuala Lumpur.

Gamuda has also hired experienced local team members who’ve worked on some of the biggest projects this country has seen. This local skillset is complemented by SMEs from overseas who have current, expert knowledge of subject areas like tunnelling or rail.

I had previously spent time living away from my home in Malaysia, so I was prepared for there to be differences when I arrived here. However, I quickly realised that as long as you are a good person and willing to work hard, then you’re welcomed in Australia no matter what your background is. The multicultural and diverse team at Gamuda Australia is a shining example of this.

In a recent census, more than 75% of Australians identify with an ancestry other than Australian; about 45% have at least one parent born overseas, and about 26% of the population was born in another country.

There are many other aspects that make Gamuda Australia a good place to be. Gamuda’s top priority is the health and safety of workers, and the regulations and practices in this country are also very stringent. The stable government makes Australia an attractive place for large companies like Gamuda to invest in. From what I’ve seen, the State and Federal Government’s encouragement for competition in the market to drive standards and provide the best value possible to the taxpayer is second to none.

Gamuda’s commitment to Australia makes joining the local team here a viable option for the long term. There is a strong pipeline of projects here that will allow us to continue establishing ourselves in the market. This commitment gives us the security of being able to plan our own lives and careers over the long term and keep the big picture in mind.
