Railway Construction Expertise

Experts in Complex Railway Projects

Gamuda is recognised as an international expert in delivering complex railway infrastructure projects that connect cities and communities. Our capabilities in railway construction have been proven in a number of successfully executed major projects. Gamuda integrates advanced engineering solutions and cutting-edge technology to construct and deliver these large-scale rail projects.

Our Core Capabilities in Railway Infrastructure Development

We are globally recognised for our expertise in designing, constructing, and commissioning state-of-the-art railway infrastructure projects. Our comprehensive capabilities encompass the development of full turnkey solutions for both above ground and under ground rail track networks and stations to implementing innovative signalling and electrical systems for efficient operations.

Sydney Metro West – Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility (SMF)

Our team successfully delivered major civil, structural, utility and water infrastructure works for the Sydney Metro West Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility (SMF) — one of the most complex civil packages for a rail stabling and maintenance facility undertaken in Australia.

Delivered within a highly constrained brownfield environment previously occupied by Parramatta Speedway and other industrial land uses, the project involved extensive contaminated land remediation, major utility relocations, bridge construction, water conveyance infrastructure, ground improvement works and complex staged civil delivery to support future metro rail operations.

The scope included:

  • Major utility relocations and live service interfaces involving Sydney Water, Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, Jemena, Telstra and Optus
  • Construction of critical bridge infrastructure including the Unwin Street Overbridge and A’Beckett’s Creek Overbridge
  • Flood relief and water conveyance structures within Duck Creek and A’Beckett’s Creek
  • Bulk earthworks, stormwater systems and retaining structures
  • Ground improvement works including piling, Concrete Injected Columns (CIC) and Load Transfer Platforms (LTP)
  • Management of contaminated materials
  • Complex traffic staging, temporary works and live operational interfaces
The project required detailed sequencing and coordination across multiple concurrent work fronts within a live operational and environmentally sensitive corridor. Construction was undertaken adjacent to Duck Creek and heritage-listed mangrove environments, requiring stringent environmental controls, creek diversion management and ongoing regulatory coordination.

A significant component of the delivery involved managing complex brownfield conditions and utility interfaces while maintaining operational continuity and achieving critical program milestones across multiple stakeholders and authorities.

The successful delivery of Clyde SMF demonstrates our capability to execute large-scale rail stabling and maintenance infrastructure in highly constrained environments — combining the technical excellence, operational delivery and stakeholder coordination required for future infrastructure projects across Australia.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

Gamuda is proudly committed to improving sustainability practices in railway construction and infrastructure, enacting a range of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles in line with our global practices.

As part of our Gamuda Green Plan 2025, we aim to achieve net zero as a company by 2050, with interim goals to reduce emissions by 30% in 2025 and 45% in 2030. We are committed to harnessing new technologies along with the latest advancements in renewable energy and efficient material design, in order to set new standards for sustainable construction in the rail sector.

In Australia, our ‘Seeds for Growth’ framework encompasses a range of initiatives designed to reduce our carbon footprint through circular construction, collaboration, empowerment and acting as a responsible business, all while prioritising the safe and efficient completion of our projects.

As an example, Gamuda’s efforts on the Sydney Metro West - Western Tunnelling Package (WTP) project, have set a new benchmark in sustainable railway construction, obtaining a ‘Leading’ Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council with an impressive score of 96.8 out of 110. The project was also shortlisted for the ISC’s 2024 Excellence in Environmental Outcomes Award, highlighting the collaborative power of Gamuda and our delivery partner Laing O’Rourke in furthering sustainability commitments throughout railway construction.

Key innovations that underscore this achievement include:

  • Introducing Australia’s first autonomous Tunnel Boring Machines (A-TBMs), which save 2,587 MWh of power and reduce CO₂ equivalent emissions by 2,001 metric tonnes.
  • Developing an innovative precast segment mix in partnership with Boral to reduce embodied carbon by 12,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
  • Powering the Tunnelling and Infrastructure Academy using solar hybrid generators, cutting emissions by 276 metric tonnes of CO₂ equivalent and producing 521 MWh of carbon-neutral energy.
  • Recycling over 110,000kL of groundwater and rainwater over the course of the tunnelling project
By implementing ESG practices across our operations, Gamuda aims to innovate and collaborate in the further development of sustainable tunnelling and railway construction practices in Australia and around the world.

Our Approach

Enabling Work

At Gamuda, we know that the best work comes from collaboration, communication, and working as a single, united team that strives for excellence—day in, day out. Which is exactly what Enabling Work has been designed to achieve.

Safety

Gamuda is globally recognised for excellence in safety – nothing is more important than the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, contractors and communities. Safety is one of our core values, and part of who we are and what we do every day. It underpins our “Enabling Work” approach.

Engineering Innovation

Gamuda has been globally recognised for developing innovative engineering solutions. From the world’s first autonomous tunnel boring machine to the world’s first dual function tunnel for both traffic and stormwater (SMART).

We don’t just deliver solutions – we use innovative engineering to invent them.

Reconciliation

By improving our understanding and establishing genuine connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, businesses and communities, we can create better opportunities for equitable employment and business engagement across our projects.
