As part of our Gamuda Green Plan 2025, we aim to achieve net zero as a company by 2050, with interim goals to reduce emissions by 30% in 2025 and 45% in 2030. We are committed to harnessing new technologies along with the latest advancements in renewable energy and efficient material design, in order to set new standards for sustainable construction in the rail sector.

In Australia, our ‘Seeds for Growth’ framework encompasses a range of initiatives designed to reduce our carbon footprint through circular construction, collaboration, empowerment and acting as a responsible business, all while prioritising the safe and efficient completion of our projects.

As an example, Gamuda’s efforts on the Sydney Metro West - Western Tunnelling Package (WTP) project, have set a new benchmark in sustainable railway construction, obtaining a ‘Leading’ Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council with an impressive score of 96.8 out of 110. The project was also shortlisted for the ISC’s 2024 Excellence in Environmental Outcomes Award, highlighting the collaborative power of Gamuda and our delivery partner Laing O’Rourke in furthering sustainability commitments throughout railway construction.

Key innovations that underscore this achievement include:

Introducing Australia’s first autonomous Tunnel Boring Machines (A-TBMs), which save 2,587 MWh of power and reduce CO₂ equivalent emissions by 2,001 metric tonnes.
Developing an innovative precast segment mix in partnership with Boral to reduce embodied carbon by 12,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
Powering the Tunnelling and Infrastructure Academy using solar hybrid generators, cutting emissions by 276 metric tonnes of CO₂ equivalent and producing 521 MWh of carbon-neutral energy.
Recycling over 110,000kL of groundwater and rainwater over the course of the tunnelling project
